This is a practice test for chapter one.  It gives examples of certain items that will appear of the test. However, it does not include all possible questions so be sure to look through all of your materials.

1.)    A person kept a record of the number of cricket chirps per minute and the air temperatures.  The data for this is shown below.  Graph this information being sure to put the independent variable on the horizontal (x) axis and the dependent on the vertical (y) axis. (HINT: Think does the temperature determine the number of chirps or does the number of chirps determine the temperature) Label your graph and give it a title. Also draw in the line of best fit.

a.)    Does there seem to be a relationship between the temperature and the number of chirps? If so is it direct or indirect?

b.)    On the basis of this data, if you recorded 18 cricket chirps per minute you would estimate what temperature?  Explain how you found your number.

c.)    If the temperature were 80 degrees Celsius, how many cricket chirps would you expect? Explain how you found your number.

Define the following terms:

1.)    Control

2.)    Pseudoscience

3.)    Law

4.)    Fact

5.)    Theory

6.)    Blind study

7.)    Double blind student

Be able to do the following

8.)    Tell the difference between an observation and an inference

9.)    List three purposes of science

10.)                        List three factors that make good science

11.)                        Tell the difference between science and technology

A student wishes to study the effect of calcium on tumor growth.  They select 40 identical mice that have tumors and split them in to two groups called A and B. Both groups get the same amount of food, water, and exercise.  However, group B mice get 5 mg of calcium.  After 10 weeks the student measures the number of tumors in each mice.  The student on average there are 5 tumors per mouse in group A and 2 tumors per mouse in group B. She concludes calcium may help stop the growth of tumors.

Identify the:

a)      Independent variable:

b)      Dependent variable:

c)      2 constants:

d)      The control

e)      The data that was collected

f)        Was this a good setup? Why or why not

g)      Are her conclusions valid?

12.)                        A student wishes to see if vitamin C helps to cure colds. Fill in the following parts of the experiment.

a.)    Question:

b.)    Hypothesis

c.)    Procedure: Explain how you would come up with a test for this.

d.)    Independent variable

e.)    Dependent variable

f.)      Constants

g.)    Control

PROBLEMS: SHOW ALL WORK AND INCLUDE PROPER UNITS.

13.)                        A 100 gram piece of metal has a density of 8 g/cm3.  If I cut it in half, what is the density of each piece? Explain why.

14.)                        An equal mass of gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) are placed in water and the amount of water displaced is measured. Which will displace more water? Explain why.

15.)                        A rectangular block of silver measures 30 cm by 10 cm by 5 cm.

a.)    What is the volume of the silver?

b.)    What is the mass of this silver?

16.)                        A gold nugget has a volume of 10 cm3. What is the mass of this piece?

17.)                        A bar of nickel has a mass of 50 grams. What is the volume of this piece?

18.)                        A 50 cm3 piece of metal has a mass of 356.5 grams. Find the density.  Also look on your periodic table and find which metal this is.
