GUIDELINES FOR LAB REPORTS
CHEMISTRY

YOU WILL COLLECT THE DATA TOGETHER, BUT EACH PERSON WILL WRITE HIS/HER OWN LAB REPORT IN THEIR LAB NOTEBOOK!!!! ( You may share your graphs and tables as well)

1.) Purpose: describe the purpose of the lab.

2.)  Safety/ Chemical hazards and disposals: List all safety concerns involved in the lab.  Also, for EACH chemical used describe the hazards associated with it as well as proper disposal procedures.

2.) Procedure: If it is a lab handout, you may just say refer to lab, and give a citation. If it is one we did together as a class to come up with a procedure, then you need to give a detailed procedure of what we did. Ask if you are not sure. However, always list your independent and dependent variables and also your constants and control.

3.) Observations and Collected Data: This section should include written observations of what you saw during the experiment. (qualitative data) It should also contain any data tables (quantitative data) that you made or filled out in a lab report. Be sure to have titles on all of your tables. If made in Excel, you can print and cut out and tape in your lab notebook. Also, be sure to include all calculations in this area. Calculations need to have a short description telling me what you are trying to figure out. Be sure your data and calculations have the correct number of significant digits and the correct units.

4.) Results: This section needs to include your summary data which could be a graph/table and your percent error. Be sure to have a proper graph with a title, axis labeled, etc. If you have a percent error, be sure to show your work. MAKE SURE YOUR RESULTS MATCH YOUR DATA!

5.) Discussion and Conclusion: In this section you interpret your results. What is the overall knowledge gained from the experiment? What can you conclude? How does the data help justify your conclusions Were there any sources of errors and if so what were they?

6.) Assigned questions from the lab. In this section you need to answer all of the assigned questions from the lab.
